Title loans · Paying off early

Can you pay off a title loan early in Texas? Usually, yes.

How to ask for your exact payoff amount in writing, what to check before you pay, and how to make sure your title comes back to you.

Usually, yes. Most title loans can be paid off before the due date, and paying early can cut short the interest and fees that keep adding up, depending on how your agreement charges them. Before you pay, ask your lender for the exact payoff amount in writing, with a "good through" date, and check your loan agreement for any early payoff fee. After you pay, get a paid-in-full receipt and make sure the lien comes off your title.

You're not alone

If you've been wanting out of your title loan for a while, you're in very large company. When the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau studied millions of single-payment title loans, it found that more than four in five were renewed the day they were due, and only about 12% were paid off without quickly borrowing again. Texas numbers tell the same story: in the state's 2025 annual report on credit access businesses, only 7,561 single-payment title loans were paid in full or closed without ever being refinanced, while these businesses reported 228,399 refinances (renewals) of single-payment title loans that same year. NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth talked with a North Texas borrower who paid nearly $7,000 over 16 months on a $2,000 loan and still wasn't close to the principal. If the balance feels like it never moves, that's not a personal failure. It's how a lot of these loans are built, and there are ways out.

Why paying a title loan off early can matter

On many title loans, most or all of each payment goes to interest and fees, so the amount you borrowed barely changes. Every extra month the loan stays open is another month of those charges. Paying it off sooner, or paying down principal when you can, is what actually shrinks the total. Our article on why your title loan balance never seems to go down walks through the math.

How to pay off your title loan early, step by step

  1. Read your loan agreement firstLook for words like "prepayment," "early payoff" or "payoff fee." The CFPB notes that some loan contracts include a prepayment penalty, and that you can ask the lender to remove it. If you can't find the answer, ask the lender to point to the exact section.
  2. Ask for the full payoff amount, in writingDon't settle for your monthly payment or "current balance." Ask for the "full payoff amount, good through" a specific date, by email, text or a printed letter. Our guide to your title loan payoff amount explains why these numbers differ.
  3. Ask what's inside that numberPrincipal, interest or fees through the payoff date, late fees, and any add-on products. If something looks unfamiliar, ask what it is before you pay. See our article on title loan add-ons and extra fees.
  4. Ask exactly how and where to payWhich payment methods they accept, where to send it, any cut-off time, and how long it takes to post. Ask for a receipt with your account number on it.
  5. Pay before the good-through dateInterest and fees can keep adding up, so a quote is only good for a short window. If the date passes, ask for a new quote instead of guessing.
  6. Get your paid-in-full letter and your titleThe Texas Department of Motor Vehicles explains that how a lien comes off depends on your title type: with a paper title, the lender releases the lien and mails you the title, and you take it with the release to your county tax office for a clean title; with an electronic title, the lender works with TxDMV and a paper title is mailed out. Ask the lender which applies to you. More in how to get your car title back after payoff.
Check your payoff quote for
  • Your name and loan or account number
  • The exact payoff amount
  • The "good through" date
  • What's included: principal, interest or fees, and any other charges
  • Accepted payment methods and where to send payment
  • What happens with your title after payment, and who to call if it doesn't arrive

The monthly payment is what the lender asks for. The payoff amount is what actually ends the loan.

What if you can't pay it all at once?

Paying early doesn't have to mean paying everything today. If you can put extra money toward the loan, ask the lender how extra payments are applied (to principal, or to future interest) and get the answer in writing. Our guide to paying down your title loan principal shows how. If money is tight this month, it often helps to talk to your lender before the due date, not after.

Paying off early through a title loan refinance or buyout

Many people searching how to pay off a title loan early are really looking for a way to refinance it or have it bought out. A title loan buyout means another company pays your current lender the payoff amount directly, and you then work with that company under a new written agreement. The same steps above still matter: a written payoff quote, a good-through date, and confirmation that the old loan is paid in full. Whether a refinance or buyout makes sense depends on your car, your balance, your income and your current agreement, so look at the numbers side by side before deciding. Our title loan refinance & buyout guide explains how it works.

Quick answers

Is there a penalty for paying off a title loan early in Texas?

It depends on your loan agreement. Look for words like "prepayment," "early payoff" or "payoff fee," and if you can't find them, ask the lender to point to the exact section and confirm the answer in writing. The CFPB notes that some loan contracts include a prepayment penalty and that you can ask the lender to remove it.

How do I get my exact title loan payoff amount?

Ask your lender for the "full payoff amount, good through" a specific date, and ask for it by email, text or printed letter. Make sure it shows your account number, what's included (principal, interest or fees, any other charges) and how to pay. Your monthly payment and your payoff amount are not the same number.

When do I get my title back after paying off a title loan?

It depends on your lender and whether your title is paper or electronic. With a paper title, the lender releases the lien and mails you the title, and you take it to your county tax office for a clean title. With an electronic title, the lender works with the Texas DMV and a paper title is mailed out. Ask the lender how and when they'll release the lien, and keep your paid-in-full letter.

Can I pay off my title loan early with a refinance or buyout?

In a buyout, another company pays your current lender the payoff amount directly and you then work with that company under a new written agreement. Whether it makes sense depends on your car, balance, income and current agreement, so compare the numbers first.
