They’re called Community Development Financial Institutions, or CDFIs. They’re certified by the U.S. Treasury’s CDFI Fund to serve low-income and underserved communities. Some are banks, hundreds are credit unions, and some are nonprofit loan funds.
Why they matter if your credit is damaged
- Flexible criteria. Many work with low or no credit scores and look at your whole situation, including non-traditional income like gig work.
- Mission over margin. Their purpose is to serve people mainstream lenders overlook, and some offer small-dollar loans specifically as an alternative to payday and title loans.
- Extra help. Many also offer credit-building products and financial coaching.
For some people, a community lender is the first lender that ever looked past the score.
How to find one
- Search the official listsThe U.S. Treasury’s CDFI Fund (cdfifund.gov) lists certified CDFIs, and the Opportunity Finance Network has a free CDFI locator.
- Look for consumer or personal loansMany CDFIs focus on small businesses or housing, so check which ones offer personal loans.
- Call and explain your situationTell them you’re trying to get out of a high-interest loan. Ask what they offer and what they need from you.
- Bring your paperworkProof of income, ID, and your current loan’s payoff amount.
Things to know going in
CDFIs are local or regional, so the one that fits you depends on where you live. They can also be slower than a title loan store, sometimes taking weeks, and loan sizes vary. If you need something faster, or the CDFI can’t cover the whole balance, look at other options for people with bad credit, including payoff and buyback arrangements.
